WATCH: Becky G Honors Her Late Grandfather in ‘Querido Abuelo’ Music Video

Becky G’s regional Mexican music album is coming sooner than we think. Today (Sept. 14), the Mexican-American pop star released the music video for “Querido Abuelo,” an ode to her late grandfather.

Becky G first started teasing her regional Mexican music album back in March. She teamed up with Mexican superstar Peso Pluma for the song “Chanel,” which they also performed at Coachella together. In June, Becky G followed that up with “La Nena,” featuring Mexican singer Gabito Ballesteros. Now, she is releasing her first solo song from her upcoming album, which she dedicates to her grandfather, who passed away two years ago.

“Querido Abuelo” is a heartfelt sierreño song where Becky G sings about the moments she shared with her grandfather. She co-directed the music video, which includes home movies of a young Becky embracing her Mexican roots. She can be seen as a child performing baile folklórico and singing Vicente Fernández’s “Cruz Del Olvido“ to her grandfather. The personal video also includes Becky G today getting together with her other grandparents and cousins.

“Querido Abuelo” will be included in Becky G’s third album, called Esquinas. The cover for the LP includes a photo of a baby Becky dressed up like a Mexican vaquera. She expressed her excitement about soon dropping a regional Mexican album in an Instagram post.

“This album is inspired by my roots and the music I’ve been listening to since I was a kid, but it also has a touch of my flow (as always!),” she wrote in Spanish. “My wish is to help you remember that it’s never too late to learn more from your roots and that yes we can be de aquí Y de allá.”

Esquinas will be released on Sept. 28. For Our Heritage Month, Becky G was announced as a performer for NPR’s “El Tiny” Desk series, which kicks off on Sept. 15.
