New Music: Mr. Cheeks of Lost Boyz Defines 'Legacy' Ushering In More LB Fam

You need a party started fast? Throw on any of the bouncy beats by the Lost Boyz and let lead MC, Mr. Cheeks raspy voice rock the set. The Queens, NY foursome of Cheeks, Spigg Nice, Pretty Lou and one of the greatest hypemen ever (and Cheeks’ brother, whose birthday is today, May 14th…may he rest in peace), Freaky Tah gave us those 90s block party anthems with “Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz,” followed by “Lifestyles of the Rich & Shameless,” and rounding out their debut album on the Uptown/MCA label, Legal Drug Money (1995) with the love story single, “Renee.”

After enduring crew tragedies, with the passing of Tah and the incarceration of Spigg Nice, Cheeks, named one of the top 50 MCs by Da Union DJs, carried on the Lost Boyz brand as a solo artist. He scored big with an early 2000’s club/street hit in the rambunctious “Lights, Camera, Action!” which made it to number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs on Billboard.

With some years between releases and touring the world, Cheeks is back with longtime collaborator K Chrys and Freaky Tah’s son, Freaky Kah with the new EP, Legacy. The six song project is really a vibe of mid-tempo tracks that range from grimy (“Money”), to groove heavy (“Lets Ride”) to dealing with grief, like on the “My Brother” ode to those that have passed on in their lives. Cheeks explains the inspiration behind the EP like this, “in the middle of a pandemic, The Lost Boyz are making hip-hop history with Legacy offering new music that’s been co-signed by radio veterans DJ Enuff and Rosenberg [of New York’s Hot97 FM] spinning several tracks on their respective radio shows.” In addition to that support, Legacy also has the nod from DJ Suss One, while the wave is spreading.

In somber news, Cheeks mourned his former label CEO, Andre Harrell of Uptown Records recently.

Pushing with heavy hearts, the LB Fam is looking to bring real lyrics and great music with Legacy. Check it out below.
