Mexican Icon María Félix Honored with Limited-Edition Barbie — See It Here
As Greta Gerwig’s summer blockbuster Barbie continues to cash in at the movie theater, Mattel is expanding its Barbie doll roster to pay tribute to a Latina icon: María Félix, AKA La Doña.
On Tuesday (August 15), which marks National Mexican Film Day, the toy manufacturer unveiled a limited-edition Barbie designed in the likeness of the Mexican actress. Félix was known for her movies during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, including Doña Bárbara, Enamorada, and The Guns of Juana Gallo, to name a few.
“An incomparable beauty with ambition, intelligence, drive, and a social conscience, María Félix was a Mexican movie star whose performances in international films captivated audiences across the world,” reads a description on the Mattel website. “She used her fame and influence to advocate for positive change across Mexican and Latin societies. Barbie honors this cultural icon with a doll that glimmers in an elegant gold and black gown and shines with ornate oversized jewelry.”
Designed by Carlyle Nuera, the Lead Designer for Mattel’s Barbie Signature Tribute Collection line, the doll is accessorized with satin gloves, gold earrings and brooch, a sheer scarf, and a black tulle train.
A few of the other Latina Barbie dolls that Mattel has introduced to customers include Shakira, Celia Cruz, America Ferrera, Katya Echazarreta, and Sacha Calle as Supergirl.
The María Félix Barbie doll will officially launch on August 16, 2023, at 9 a.m. PT on Amazon. The retail price for the doll is $40.
