Maluma Reaches No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay Chart, Proving He Can Do It All
As the premiere of Maluma and Jennifer Lopez’s romantic comedy Marry Me approaches, we knew we would see him making headlines promoting the film. What we didn’t see coming, though, is that he’d secure another highlight at the same time. Maluma just landed his first-ever No. 1 song on the Regional Mexican Airplay for “Cada Quien,” his collab with Grupo Firme, based on Billboard’s data survey for the week of Feb. 5.
Yes, you read that right. We know he’ll make any Latin pop chart, but Regional Mexican from the Colombian pop star? That’s interesting and innovative to see! But this isn’t the first time Maluma has charted a Regional Mexican song. His collaboration with Carlos Rivera on “100 Años” reached No. 6 last year. What can’t Maluma, baby do?
“This is very nice news because I’ve always been a fan of regional Mexican music, of ranchera and mariachi. Being on a Mexican chart in the U.S., well that’s a big deal. I always dreamt of that. When I travel to Mexico, it’s like being at home, I feel part of it, and I am very grateful to Grupo Firme for making this possible,” Maluma told Billboard about the success of the collaboration.
Fans loved the unexpected collaboration between the two major artists. They want more of it!
A Twitter user even goes as far as speculating Maluma to make a special appearance during Grupo Firme’s Coachella set. Which, in hindsight, isn’t too much of a wishful thought knowing the magnitude of the two-weekend festival. Having both of them on stage to perform this No. 1 single would be epic.
Other non-Regional Mexican artists to have reached No.1 on Regional Mexican Airplay include Enrique Iglesias (1997), Pilar Montenegro (2002), Franco de Vita with K-Paz (2009), Christian Nodal with David Bisbal (2017), and Los Angeles Azules featuring Natalia Lafourcade (2019).
