Bobby Pulido Makes History: From Tejano Icon to Texas Congressman

In a stunning political shift, norteño-tejano music icon Bobby Pulido has officially transitioned from the stage to the halls of power. Born José Roberto Pulido Jr., the artist announced his retirement from music in late 2024 to pursue a career in politics, a move that culminated in a historic victory this Tuesday (Nov. 3) during the U.S. midterm elections. By flipping a House seat in Texas for the Democratic party, Pulido has proven that his influence extends far beyond the recording studio.

The two-time Latin Grammy winner, who remains a celebrated figure in the industry, defeated Republican incumbent Monica De La Cruz in Congressional District 15. His campaign was marked by a unique approach, as he frequently engaged with voters at concerts, weddings, and graduation parties—venues where his music has been a staple for over three decades.

A New Chapter for South Texas

Following the election results, Pulido addressed his constituents with a message of gratitude and commitment. “Thank you South Texas. Tonight we made history,” he stated. “For over 30 years, you played my music at your weddings, your quinceañeras and your carne asadas, and the past year you welcomed me into those same celebrations on the campaign trail. Tonight, you trusted me with something even bigger than a song, you trusted me with your future and I will work hard everyday to honor it.”

The 53-year-old politician campaigned on a platform focused on economic affordability, accessible health care, and the removal of corporate influence from elections. He also took a firm stance against the negative impacts of mass deportation raids, resonating deeply with the Rio Grande Valley community.

From ‘Desvelado’ to the Capitol

Pulido’s journey to the U.S. Congress is rooted in a lifelong connection to South Texas. Born in Edinburg to the legendary Tex-Mex singer Roberto Pulido, he burst onto the scene in 1995 with his debut album, Desvelado. The title track became a massive hit, and his subsequent career saw him release 15 albums and secure numerous spots on the #Billboard charts. Even during his campaign, his classic hits continued to find new audiences, with “Desvelado” climbing the Latin Streaming Songs chart this past July.

As he prepares to take office in January, Pulido remains connected to his roots. He is confirmed to attend the upcoming Latin Grammy awards ceremony in Las Vegas, balancing his new responsibilities as a public servant with the legacy that made him a household name. His victory is part of a broader wave of historic wins for the Democratic party in the 2026 midterms, signaling a significant shift in the political landscape of the region.
