Rubén Blades to Receive Billboard Icon Award at 2026 Latin Music Awards

The legendary Panamanian artist Rubén Blades will be recognized with the prestigious Billboard Icon Award at the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Billboard and Telemundo announced on Thursday (Sept. 17). The iconic musician and songwriter will receive the honor during the ceremony on Oct. 22, which will be broadcast live from Miami.

The Billboard Icon Award is reserved for artists whose careers have maintained long-term relevance while establishing them as distinguished figures within their genre. Honorees are celebrated worldwide for achieving significant musical and commercial success. Previous recipients of this esteemed award include Maná, Chayanne, Ivy Queen, and Laura Pausini.

Over the course of more than five decades, Blades has served as one of the most influential voices in Latin music. He is widely credited with redefining salsa through a unique blend of musical innovation and profound storytelling. As a central figure in the New York salsa revolution of the 1970s, he expanded the horizons of classic Afro-Cuban sounds by incorporating elements of rock, jazz, and global musical influences.

His catalog remains timeless, defined by socially conscious lyrics and unforgettable characters. Classics such as “Pedro Navaja,” “Decisiones,” and “El Padre Antonio y Su Monaguillo Andrés” continue to resonate with audiences today.

It is important to acknowledge the contributions of all the musicians, arrangers, composers and engineers I have worked with, as well as the group that has been by my side on this journey for the past 16 years, Roberto Delgado y Orquesta de Panamá.”

In addition to the award, Blades will participate in an exclusive Icon Q&A at Billboard Latin Music Week, where he will sit down with the publication’s co-chief content officer, Leila Cobo. Beyond his musical legacy, Blades remains active as an actor and performer, currently touring with the Roberto Delgado Big Band to support his latest production, Fotografías.

The 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards will air on Telemundo on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. ET, with streaming options available via the Telemundo app, Peacock, and Telemundo Internacional.
