WATCH: Puerto Rican Julian Strawther Goes Viral for March Madness Shot
With his team down 76-75, Puerto Rican Gonzaga sophomore forward Julian Strawther inbounded the ball to guard Hunter Sallis who dribbled it up the floor with 12 seconds remaining in the game with UCLA during March Madness.
Before he crossed halfcourt, the 20-year-old Strawther, cut toward the March Madness logo at center court. There were 10 seconds left when Sallis pitched the basketball back to Strawther – plenty of time to drive the ball into the paint or set up a play to get a mid-range jumper and win the game.
Instead, Gonzaga fans and viewers at home were probably shocked when Strawther caught the ball and rose to shoot a confident 3-pointer a few feet above the arc and over the outstretched arm of UCLA guard Dylan Andrews. The shot found the bottom of the basket and Gonzaga ultimately won the game 79-76, sending the Bulldogs to the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament.
“It’s moments like that you can’t make up,” Strawther said during the team’s post-game press conference. “Words can’t describe how proud I am of our team and our resilience.”
Making the game-winning shot even sweeter was the fact that it was played in Las Vegas, where Strawther was born and where he played basketball for Liberty High School. Strawther had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the game. It took everything Gonzaga had to win and to overcome an impressive game by UCLA’s Mexican American guard Jaime Jaquez Jr., who scored 29 points and pulled down 11 boards.
Now, Julian Strawther and the No. 3 Bulldogs will face No. 4 UConn on Saturday (March 25) at 8:30 p.m. ET on TBS.
