WATCH: Mon Laferte’s Spiritual Performance on NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk

Graced in an enchanting church atmosphere full of lit candles and white lilies, the very pregnant Chilean singer-songwriter Mon Laferte performed her NPR Tiny Desk (Home Concert) in the depths of Tepoztlán, Mexico, out today Jan. 12. 

The Mexican tribute comes years in the making. Mon Laferte has always been giving odes to the wonderful Mexico — a country that has always been an inspiration to her and where she began her musical career. It was then no surprise when she dedicated her sixth studio album SEIS to diving deeper into Mexico’s traditional music, singing her interpretations of boleros and regional music. SEIS is now her first Grammy-nominated album for “Best Regional Mexican Music Album (Includes Tejano).”

Now, we know that Mon Laferte is constantly evolving her sound and immersing her musical abilities into different styles. And she doesn’t only tease a single here and there, but she goes as far as devoting full-length albums to test her chameleon-like artistic abilities (remember Norma?). That’s what makes her unique in the mainstream space: her capacity to grow and stretch her vocal techniques.

In this ethereal performance, she interprets “Tu Falta de Querer” from Mon Laferte Vol. 1, “Por Qué Me Fui A Enamorar de Ti” from Norma, “Se Me Va A Quemar El Corazón” from SEIS, and “Placer Hollywood” from 1940 Carmen. Needless to say, her fans were completely enthralled by the Chilean muse’s range of selections.

Another Twitter fan comments on her ability to perform such compelling vocals, being pregnant and all: “Pregnant Mon singing as if nothing and I get tired climbing the stairs, in short, Mon Laferte is a super woman.”
