Met Gala 2021: Everything You Need to Know About the Party and Co-Hosts (*Ahem* Billie Eilish)
After cancelling their annual event in 2020 (😢) and postponing it in 2021 (😩), Vogue‘s yearly Met Gala has officially been scheduled (😀). Co-chairs have been chosen and a theme has been set. Nature is healing.
Ahead of the big night, Vogue has released enough info to get one loud shriek out of me, a die-hard fan of the fashion event. Ahead, read up on everything we know about the 2021 Met Gala.
When is the 2021 Met Gala?
Normally, the ’21 Met Gala would have taken place already, as it always falls on the first Monday in May. This year, however, the party will instead be hosted Monday, September 13 at 5:30 pm ET. As of now, the traditional early-May date is still set to proceed on schedule in 2022.
What is this year’s Met Gala theme?
The Met Gala’s theme always coincides with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibition of the moment, which is unveiled at the VIP party, then opened to the public later that month. The next display will be the first half of a two-part show celebrating American style. September’s party center around the theme “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” The second installation will highlight: “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” debuting next May.
Can you watch the Met Gala?
Yep! For the first time ever, Vogue will be streaming the red carpet exclusively on their website. Viewers will be able to follow as celebs arrive in real time to the best red carpet of the year.
Who is hosting the Met Gala?
Each year, the Met Gala is hosted and planned by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, with the help of a few select designers (Tom Ford and Adam Mosseri) and a group of trend-starting celebrities. The elite team works together to ensure the Gala lives up to its reputation as the biggest night in fashion. For 2k21, they’ve tapped some of the coolest celebrities in the game, all having influenced global and American style in their own unique way.
Actor Timothée Chalamet, poet Amanda Gorman, tennis champion Naomi Osaka, and pop star Billie Eilish will all help to mold this year’s super-exclusive party. At 19 years old, Billie will be the youngest person ever to co-chair the historic event.
In the announcement, Vogue wrote: “Each of the Met’s four cohosts embodies the defining factor of American style: individualism. They may approach the concept differently, but their shared passion for expressing themselves through clothing connects with the exhibition’s theme. Chalamet, Eilish, Osaka, and Gorman have all developed a distinct visual language for their public personae, one that is informed by the legacy of iconic fashion made in the USA.”
Who will be attending?
Though the guest list isn’t released ahead of time, you can bet that virtually every A-list celebrity will be in attendance. Names like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Cardi B, and Kim Kardashian attend the event every year and have become Met Gala royalty, due to their uncanny ability to nail a theme. Kylie Jenner, another a Met favorite, is currently in NYC for Fashion Week and will likely stick around for the red carpet on Monday to flaunt her baby bump.
Sadly, Zendaya has confirmed that she will not be attending this year, due to her Euphoria filming schedule.
Who will perform at the Met Gala?
Typically, those who co-host the event will also give a live performance at the party. It’s likely that Billie Eilish will sing her chart-topping hits, while Amanda Gorman performs one of her powerful poems for the elite attendees.
