You Won’t Believe Who Canelo Álvarez Brought Out for Latest Boxing Match
Plenty of Mexican artists came out to support Canelo Álvarez during his boxing match on Saturday night (Sept. 30). The Mexican middleweight champion was joined by pop star Danna Paola, rapper Santa Fe Klan, and more for his highly-anticipated match.
Over the weekend, Álvarez faced Jermell Charlo at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After twelve rounds in the ring together, the judges decided unanimously that the Mexican boxer won against Charlo, who was mostly on the defense. Álvarez held onto his undisputed super middleweight championship title.
Before the match started, Danna Paola sang a powerful rendition of the Mexican national anthem in the ring. In an Instagram post after the event, Paola revealed she “overcame one of [her] biggest fears.”
“THANK YOU, Canelo, for letting me join you, for your support, for representing the country together with all of us who were there, and for giving all of yourself!” she wrote. “THE CHAMPION WON, MEXICO WON, WE WON!!! I take tonight as one of the best moments in my life.”
While walking to the ring, Mexican rappers Santa Fe Klan and Tornillo joined Álvarez. Santa Fe Klan and Tornillo performed the song “Por Mi México” live.
“Congrats, Canelo, on your [championship] belt!” Santa Fe Klan wrote in a post on Instagram. “LONG LIVE MEXICO! We had a great time carnal, and we’ll keep representing the [Mexican flag].”
Álvarez also proudly represented his Mexican roots at the afterparty. He was spotted performing “El Rey,” a song popularized by the late Mexican icon Vicente Fernández. Álvarez really dug deep to sing the ranchera music classic from his heart.
Álvarez’s afterparty included special guests like Steve Aoki and J Balvin, who performed his latest song “Dientes” live.
