WATCH: Man Goes Viral for Smashing Crown After Wife Loses Beauty Pageant in Brazil

Crowning for Miss Gay Mato Grosso 2023, an LGBTQIAP+ beauty pageant in Brazil went viral on Saturday (May 27), after video footage of an enraged man leaping on stage and smashing the crown spread across the internet.

The video footage captures two contestants, Nathally Becker and Emannuelly Belini, holding hands and eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new Miss Mato Grosso Gay 2023. Becker was there to represent the city of Cuiabá and Belini was there for Várzea Grande. The crown hovered over their heads before Belini was declared the winner.

Before the crown was placed on the winner, however, Becker’s husband jumped on stage, grabbed the crown, and smashed it to the floor. He then grabbed his wife and went to pull her away. But before leaving the stage, he once again grabbed the crown and threw it to the ground, allegedly breaking it to pieces. Security then escorted him away.

Following the event, Miss Gay Mato Grosso released a public statement on their Instagram account in Portuguese. “We vehemently condemn the incident that occurred at the time of the crowning of the elected. (The partner of) Miss Ciuabá, who placed 2nd, invaded the stage and aggressively destroyed the crown.”

The public statement also mentioned they had contacted their legal team to see what could be done after the incident. And they made sure to mention that they honor the contestant who won while also sympathizing with the runner-up, who is not responsible in any way for her husband’s actions.

The following day, Belini also made a public statement on Instagram regarding her win and the turn of events that took place that night. In Portuguese, she said, “I want to thank everyone for the support I’ve been getting through social media, all my fans, friends, team.”

She continued by emphasizing the importance of each contestant and that “regardless of what happened, I believe this is a situation we need to reflect on.”
