Selena Gomez Character from ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Revealed to Be Bisexual

Over a decade later, fans of Wizards of Waverly Place finally know that Alex Russo, played by Selena Gomez, and Stevie Nichols, played by Hayley Kiyoko, didn’t get to play out their full storyline when the show was airing. In fact, Alex was bisexual, something that would’ve been revolutionary when it aired in 2007.

Peter Murrieta, the showrunner for the first four seasons, confirmed the long-held theory to fans on the Wizards of Waverly Pod hosted by Jennifer Stone, who played Harper Finkle, and David DeLuise, who played Jerry Russo.

During the interview, Stone asked Murrieta about what storyline he wished he could have explored more. Murrieta quickly responded with, “I wished we could have played more with what was quite obvious to a lot of us was the relationship between Stevie and Alex.”

“Disney Channel has had [LGBTQ+] characters, and they did it,” Murrieta went on to explain. “At that time it wasn’t a thing. But we got as close as we could… I mean, it was pretty close.”

Stone’s revelation (predictably) set the internet ablaze as many felt like their experiences were validated as they always felt this connection with Gomez’s character. Some even admitted to crushing on her.

With plenty of others declaring that they won.

Wizards of Waverly Place was an iconic Disney channel show that aired from 2007 to 2012. It followed Alex and her brothers as they came into their powers and the struggles to learn how to control them while keeping this part of themselves secret from others. For many, it was considered Selena Gomez’ big break with the show running for 106 episodes.

And with this bisexual revelation, we can’t help but wonder how this revelation could’ve helped a whole generation when this show was airing. But here’s hoping there’s another special on the horizon as 2000’s shows are all getting another chance to shine. So why not Wizards of Waverly Place? And maybe they can explore this uncharted territory for Alex and Stevie.
