Peso Pluma Inspires at CUNY Graduation & More Latin Music Highlights

From career milestones to major announcements and those small, significant moments that define the industry, Billboard editors highlight the most uplifting developments in Latin music. Here is a look at what transpired in the Latin music world this week.

CUNY Celebrates Mexican-American Graduates with Peso Pluma

The City University of New York (CUNY) hosted its inaugural systemwide Mexican-American graduation ceremony on Saturday (May 2) at the Lehman College Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx. The event featured a surprise appearance by Peso Pluma, who served as the class padrino. Organized by the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute and led by Dr. Lizbeth de la Cruz Santana, the ceremony honored the academic achievements and cultural heritage of nearly 200 graduates from 14 CUNY institutions.

“This graduation marked a historic milestone as the first CUNY-wide commencement dedicated to honoring Mexican-American students and their families,” Dr. De La Cruz Santana shared. “Inviting Peso Pluma reflected a broader effort to celebrate the contributions of Mexican and Mexican-American communities across New York City and the United States.”

The event also served as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for educational equity. Dr. De La Cruz Santana noted that for decades, Mexican-American students faced systemic segregation. “Landmark moments like Mendez v. Westminster and the East Los Angeles Walkouts demanded access, dignity, and representation,” she added.

For the graduates, the superstar’s presence was a deeply emotional highlight. “To witness such a historic moment for our community, our culture, and future generations was unforgettable,” said graduate Rachelle Campos-Suarez.

Venezuelan Singer Opens Art Exhibition in Venice

Multidisciplinary artist Eduardo Galán reached a significant milestone this week, transitioning from his musical roots to the world of visual arts. On May 6, Galán inaugurated his solo exhibition, The Circle of Love, at the Kokonton Gallery in Venice, Italy, coinciding with the preview of the 61st Venice Art Biennale.

“This body of work explores the relationship between time, transformation, and that which endures,” Galán explained. “Through materials such as cement, Japanese paper, and 24k gold, I sought to create works that feel both fragile and eternal. For me, this exhibition represents the moment when music, painting, and life finally began to speak the same language.” The exhibition remains open to the public until May 24.

Coca-Cola Music Hall Implements Phone-Free Policy

In Puerto Rico, the Coca-Cola Music Hall has made history by becoming the first venue on the island to adopt a phone-free system. The initiative, which debuted during comedian Marcello Hernández’s performance last month, aims to foster deeper engagement between performers and the audience by eliminating digital distractions.

“This type of experience is designed to allow the audience to fully enjoy the show, keeping their attention on the stage,” said Arleene Pérez, general manager of the venue. Attendees secure their devices in locked pouches upon entry, a system that has already been successfully utilized for subsequent events, including a performance by Chris Tucker.
