Omar Apollo Kicks Off NPR’s “El Tiny” With Homage to His Mexican Roots

Omar Apollo is the first artist to lead NPR’s “El Tiny” desk series for Our Heritage Month. His performance was released today (Sept. 15), a collection of recent hits like “Evergreen.”

This week, NPR announced the second coming of the “El Tiny” desk series for Latinx Heritage Month. Tokischa, Carla Morrison, Jessie Reyez, Girl Ultra, Trueno, and Carin León are among the artists slated to release special performances from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Apollo is kicking off this year’s new series.

For his “El Tiny” desk performance, the “Tamagotchi” singer visited NPR’s office. He performed stripped-down versions of “Evergreen,” “Petrified,” and “Endlessly” from his latest album Ivory. The Mexican-American singer also performed a new version of “En El Olvido,” accompanied by Mariachi Lindas. Throughout his adorable set, he made sure to proudly represent his Mexican roots. 

The “El Tiny” desk concerts were curated by NPR Music’s Alt.Latino co-hosts Anamaria Sayre and Felix Contreras. As part of the series relaunch, Alt.Latino will also release new weekly episodes of the podcast and interviews with Latine musicians. 

2022 has been a breakout year for Apollo. Last month, he was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards for Push Performance of the Year. Tomorrow, he will be performing on Good Morning America. “Evergreen” is becoming his biggest hit yet. The song has amassed over 7 million global streams. Over on TikTok, the song has generated over 103 thousand video creations and 145 million views.
