Meet Cupido, the Spanish Auto-Tune Heartbreak Darlings
Mark your calendars. On June 27, Univision will be hosting its annual Premios Juventud with the theme to “Celebrate Your Passion.” Today (June 14), nominations have been announced, with Karol G and J Balvin leading them.
The show is being billed as a recognition of “the best of Latin music, social causes, and pop culture.” Ten new categories were added to reflect the evolution in music, including “Female Artist – On the Rise,” “Male Artist – On the Rise,” and “Best Couple Song,” (for performers who collaborated while they were in a romantic relationship — newlyweds Anuel AA and Yailin La Más Viral’s “Si Tu Me Busca” made the cut ).
The evening’s hosts include actress and singer Danna Paola, Grupo Firme frontman Eduin Caz, bachata superstar Prince Royce, and El Gordo y La Flaca host Clarissa Molina. Danna was part of a memorable ensemble of Latinas memorializing Selena Quintanilla during the 2020 Premios Juventud ceremony.
This is the first time Premios Juventud will be held on the island of Puerto Rico. It’s a commitment to the theme and an homage to stars like Bad Bunny, Lunay, Ozuna, and Farruko, whose domination of music streams and social media is shaping the culture being celebrated that evening.
J Balvin and Karol G lead the pack with 11 nominations apiece. They are followed by Rauw Alejandro, who picked up nine noms, and Farruko, who has eight. Ángela Aguilar, Camilo, and Grupo Firme trail the group with seven nominations. Anitta, Christian Nodal, El Alfa, Maluma, and Rosalía each picked up six nominations.
Voting begins today and ends on June 27 on their website. The award ceremony will be streamed live on Univision from Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Thursday, July 21 at 7 p.m. ET/6 CT.
