Make Sure Georgia’s On Your Mind With Merch That Will Support a Fair Run-Off Election

On January 5th, Georgia voters will have the opportunity to decide which party has control over the U.S. Senate. None of the candidates, David Perdue (R), Kelly Loeffler (R), Raphael Warnock (D), and Jon Ossoff (D), received more than 50% of the vote in November and thus, a runoff election was scheduled for the very beginning of the new year. It is, to say the least, a crucial election, since the outcome will ultimately decide how much President-Elect Joe Biden will be able to accomplish in his first year in office.

And on top of that, Georgia has some of the strictest voting rules in the U.S., including aggressive scrutiny of voter IDs, especially for the BIPOC communities in the state, long lines, voting machine malfunctions, and purges of absentee ballots. Since President-Elect Biden won and flipped the state blue for the first time since 1992, which was in large part thanks to grassroots efforts by Stacey Abrams, Republicans have been promising even more intense voting rules in the state, especially as they pertain to restrictions caused by the pandemic. For example, the GOP senators in the state are trying to add more photo ID requirements for those who vote by mail, and eliminate secure drop boxes as an option to return mail-in votes.

It is crucial for Georgians to get to the polls, but it’s also important for the rest of the country to support a fair and balanced election come January 5th. Over the weekend, Kristen Wiig returned to Saturday Night Live and showed her support by wearing a hoodie stamped with the word “Vote” and a Georgia peach, created by the Women’s National Basketball Players Association. The sale proceeds from these sweatshirts go towards Rock the Vote and the NAACP. Many grassroots organizations have taken up the cause this holiday season as well, including the group TieDyen4Biden, which, in November, raised over $90,000 for the Biden-Harris campaign.

Additionally, the New Georgia Project, founded by Abrams, as well as Fair Fight, which recently partnered with Citizens of Humanity on a capsule collection to raise funds in support of their cause. Since this election affects every American, not just Georgians, it’s vital to support voter’s rights. Plus, buying merch is a way to support the cause and give someone a last-minute gift. Even if you’re not voting in this election, below are a few ways to lend them support, whether by giving directly to the races in Georgia or giving to the country-wide organizations supporting the right to vote, so that the outcome of their senate race in January is fair, legitimate, and representative of the people—all of them.
