Latine Artists Shine at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards

The 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards lit up Manchester’s Co-op Live arena on Nov. 10, celebrating a powerful lineup of Latine talent, with many artists making history through unforgettable performances and landmark wins. Peso Pluma, one of the night’s biggest highlights, not only took home the Best Latin award but also made history as the first Mexican artist to win in this category. His win adds to his growing list of accolades after securing the Best New Artist award last year, further solidifying his influence in the global music scene.

Peso Pluma’s acceptance speech was a special moment as he brought his producer, Jesus “Parka” Ivan Leal Reyes, to join him on stage. His win was notable not just for the award itself but for the level of competition, beating out heavyweights such as Anitta, Bad Bunny, Karol G, Rauw Alejandro, and Shakira. Peso Pluma also performed at the event, delivering a memorable live rendition of “Hollywood” from his Éxodo album, alongside special guest Estevan Plazola. The performance marked a milestone for the genre, as it was the first time a corrido had been performed at the MTV EMAs, with the Mexican flag’s colors illuminating the backdrop to honor his heritage.

Among other Latine winners, Yeri Mua made her mark as the first reggaeton mexa artist to win the Best Latin America North Act. Expressing her gratitude in a video message on Instagram, she dedicated the win to her fans, thanking them for supporting the reggaeton mexa genre. Meanwhile, Colombian singer Manuel Turizo celebrated his first EMA win for Best Latin America Central Act, ahead of his new album 201, set to release on Nov. 22. Turizo’s win reflects his growing popularity across Latin America and his potential for future international success.

The award for Best Latin America South Act went to Dillom, who also earned his first MTV EMA. Additionally, Young Miko won the Best Caribbean Act for the second consecutive year, reinforcing her place in the Caribbean music scene. Brazilian pop sensation and drag artist Pabllo Vittar won her third MTV EMA for Best Brazilian Act, continuing her streak of success and broadening the visibility of Brazilian pop music on the global stage.

Mexico had a strong presence at the event with rock band The Warning delivering a high-energy performance of their track “Automatic Sun,” further highlighting the diversity and vibrancy of the country’s musical talent.

The MTV EMAs stand out as one of the few major awards shows to recognize Latine artists according to regional categories, celebrating the unique contributions of artists from various parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. This year’s awards showcased the depth and variety of Latine music, with artists from different genres and countries receiving recognition and celebrating their cultures on a global platform.
