Latin Recording Academy Announces 2026 Special Awards Honorees
The Latin Recording Academy officially announced its 2026 special awards recipients on Tuesday, June 30. As a cornerstone of the annual Special Awards Presentation held during Latin Grammy week, the Academy is set to honor a diverse group of icons whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the global musical landscape.
This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to a stellar lineup of artists, including the Mexican-Spanish trendsetter Alaska, the evocative Cuban-Mexican musician Francisco Céspedes, the visionary Mexican singer-songwriter Lila Downs, the pioneering Brazilian artist Daniela Mercury, and the influential Dominican singer-songwriter Chichí Peralta. In addition to these honors, the prestigious Trustees Award will be bestowed upon the acclaimed Panamanian songwriter Omar Alfanno, recognizing his profound impact on the industry behind the scenes.
Celebrating Musical Excellence and Legacy
“It is a great privilege to honor these living legends — an exceptional group whose influence transcends generations and genres — who continue to enrich and redefine our musical heritage,” said Manuel Abud, CEO of The Latin Recording Academy, in a press statement. “We are delighted to celebrate their extraordinary careers, along with the recipient of the Latin Music Educator Award, during the 27th Annual Latin Grammy Week.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for performers who have made unprecedented contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the world of Latin music. Conversely, the Trustees Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry outside of performance. Both honors are determined by the Academy’s Board of Trustees.
Honoring the 2026 Class
The 2026 honorees represent a wide spectrum of cultural and artistic influence:
- Alaska: An iconic figure in the Spanish punk and synth-pop movements, known for her work with bands like Fangoria.
- Francisco Céspedes: A master of the nocturnal soundscape, blending jazz elegance with the warmth of the bolero.
- Lila Downs: A transcendent ambassador of Mexican culture, celebrated for her daring musical fusions and vocal range.
- Daniela Mercury: A pioneer of the Brazilian axé genre who has brought powerful, rhythmic energy to global stages.
- Chichí Peralta: A versatile producer and musician who has successfully blended Caribbean identity with orchestral sophistication.
- Omar Alfanno: A legendary composer whose narratives have become essential components of the Latin American songbook.
The ceremony will also feature the Latin Music Educator Award, presented in partnership with the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, to recognize an educator who has made a significant impact by integrating Latin music into their curriculum. The private ceremony for these 2026 honorees is scheduled to take place on Nov. 9 in Las Vegas.
