Here Are a Few of the Latinx Talent Nominated for This Year’s Queerties

Nominations for the Queerties were recently announced, and a few talented Latinx performers, personalities and projects were recognized. The Queerties honors the best in LGBTQ culture and media in 23 categories, including performances in TV, film and digital series, music videos, podcasts and social media platforms. Here are some of the Latinx talent nominated this year.

Raymix
Competing in the “Badass” and “Anthem” categories this year is Edmundo Gómez Moreno, who is known better by his stage name Raymix. The Mexican musician and aerospace engineer is also known as El Rey de la Electrocumbia (The King of Electrocumbia). In June 2020, Raymix came out when he released a video, telling his fans, “Today I am freer, happier than ever because now I know that I can express myself as I really am.”

Roberto J. Portales
The gay fitness expert and former Army captain has 728,000 followers on Instagram, which is probably why he got a nomination in the category “Favorite Insta Follow.” Recent posts on the social media platform include a photo of himself making extra lean turkey meatballs shirtless and a photo laying back on his couch relaxing while wearing a shirt with the words “I’m your papi” printed on it.

Juli Delgado Lopera
A queer, Colombian writer and performer, Lopera wrote ¡Cuéntamelo!, a collection of illustrations about queer immigrants in the U.S. during the 1980s. Lopera’s first-ever novel, Fiebre Tropical, is nominated in the “Best Read” category. The book is a coming-of-age story about a Colombian teen.

Jai Rodriguez
Nominated for the “Innovator Award,” Rodriguez is an actor and musician best known for his work on the Bravo reality series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and for his roles in Broadway shows like Rent. In a video produced for the Queerties, Rodriguez, who is Puerto Rican-Italian, describes how his rise to fame happened, but also explains that he’s most proud when people tell him that he inspired them to come out. “If there isn’t a seat at the table, I’m gonna bring my own,” he says. “Or I’m gonna sit on the table.”

Ricky Martin
The Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and actor, who is known as the “King of Latin Pop,” has been in the spotlight since his days with Menudo at the age of 12. His song “Simple,” is one of six tracks on his extended play called Pausa. The song is a collaboration with English singer and songwriter Sting. Martin nominated in the “Anthem” category for the Queerties.

Vico Ortiz
The non-binary and gender fluid Puerto Rican actor and LGBTQ activist has been nominated for “Best Performance in a Digital Series” for his role in the award-winning digital queer comedy These Thems. “Being nominated for a Queerty is such an absolute honor,” Ortiz said in a statement. “I’m gonna be me, live authentically and show them what I can bring to the table.”
