Bas Drops Colorful Album, ‘We Only Talk About Real Shit When We’re Fucked Up’

Bas has as colorful a background as anyone in hip-hop. Born in Paris, raised in Queens, and the son of Sudanese parents, he later went on to become Dreamville’s very first signee. Today, he’s ready to share his expansive, fourth album, We Only Talk About Real Shit When We’re Fucked Up.

Known for his globally influenced sound, Bas draws inspiration from his extensive travels across five continents since 2022. The productions encompass multiple genres, ranging from afrobeat, East Coast-inspired boom bap, dancehall, R&B, and more. Thematically, We Only Talk About Real Shit When We’re Fucked Up bounces between introspection (“Ho Chi Minh”) to heartbreak (“Diamonds”) to lavish travel exploits (“Passport Bros”).

There’s no shortage of collaborators on the 17-track project either. J. Cole, Amaarae, FKJ, A$AP Ferg, AJ Tracey, Blxckie, and Adekunle Gold all make appearances. The album also features one of our favorite, albeit unexpected, collaborations from 2019, Bas & FKJ’s “Risk.”
