Following on from its post-apocalyptic news broadcast for SS20, and a suitably bleak AW20 show, Balenciaga continues to explore the limits of dystopia with its autumn 2021 collection, which will take place in Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow, a video game set in the not-too-distant future of 2031.
The game promises to give “an in-depth look at the new collection and the projected future in which it is intended to be worn”. With the theme of ‘human destiny’, a hero avatar will take players through various zones, where they’ll be met with tasks and interactions. Whether or not an in-game Demna will appear is yet to be confirmed.
One the game is completed, players can “transcend” the Afterworld into a “virtual utopia” – mysterious.
Balenciaga isn’t the only fashion brand embracing the gaming world, with Burberry streaming its latest show on Twitch and Gucci collaborating with a group of pro gamers. Yesterday (November 23), Collina Strada launched a computer game inspired by climate change as part of this year’s GucciFest.
