WATCH: Boy Who Went Viral for Wanting to be Mexican Meets Mexican National Team
A 4-year-old boy who went viral for an adorable tantrum he threw after he found out he wasn’t Mexican recently got the chance to hang out with some famous Mexican athletes.
Earlier this month, Zavion, who is Ethiopian, was captured on video visibly upset when his mother, Belaynesh Gebre, told him he was not Mexican, despite the young boy’s insistence that he wanted to be.
On a video that Gebre posted to TikTok, which has received 12.6 million views in the last 10 days, she tries to explain to Zavion that he is Black. Zavion is not happy with the news. He wants to be Mexican. When asked by his mother why he wants to be Mexican, Zavion exclaims, “Because I eat quesadillas!”
The cute exchange between mother and son was enough to get the attention of the Mexican National Team, who invited Zavion and his family to a recent fútbol match and gifted him with a jersey and some delicious quesadillas.
During his trip to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, Zavion met with El Tri players and posed for pictures with fans who recognized him from his viral video. There’s even a section of the video where Zavion is so excited, he’s dancing in his hotel room.
“Zavion brought nothing but love, laughter and joy to so many people and that’s the only side of this we will continue to appreciate!” his mother wrote on TikTok. “He’s very proud of his own culture but we can all love and appreciate multiple cultures at once, and that’s exactly what this is proving. We need more love in the world, and I’m glad y’all have been so receptive to all that he has to give and returning it tenfold.”
