The story behind a Latin Grammy-winning Cuban protest anthem is hitting the big screen. The documentary Patria y Vida: The Power of Music will premiere at the Miami Film Festival next month. 

The song “Patria y Vida” was released in Feb. 2021 by Cuban acts Yotuel, Gente de Zona, Decemer Bueno, Maykel Osorbo, and El Funky. The title of the revolutionary track is a repudiation of the motto “Patria o Muerte” from the 1960s during Fidel Castro’s dictatorship. During the anti-government protests in Cuba in July 2021, people were playing “Patria y Vida” in support of the Free Cuba movement. At the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards, “Patria y Vida” won Song of the Year and Best Urban Song.

The documentary Patria y Vida: The Power of Music will explore the story behind the Cuban protest anthem. Beatriz Luengo, who wrote the song with Yotuel and the rest of his collaborators, will be making her directorial debut. Osorbo remains in prison in Cuba for his participation in the song. Yotuel has an order against him that has barred him from entering Cuba. Alexander Delgado and Randy Malcom, the members of Gente de Zona, revealed after the song’s release that they received a call from the FBI informing them of a kidnapping order. All of that will be explored in the documentary, as well as the song’s impact. 

“THIS IS HAPPENING!” Yotuel wrote on Instagram in Spanish. “IT’S A REAL AND TRUE STORY OF MY PEOPLE. There is no better way to understand the suffering of Cubans than to see the images of everything that we live through.”

The Miami Film Festival will take place from March 3 to 12. Tickets for the festival will be available on the festival’s website starting Feb. 10.
