Here’s Why Francia Raisa & Selena Gomez’s Friendship is Trending — For The Wrong Reasons
Women’s friendships in the entertainment business have long been filled with manufactured drama from fans and tabloids. Selena Gomez and Francia Raísa are the latest friendship to be tested by the speculation of the rumor mill after Gomez made a comment on her friendship with Taylor Swift during a recent interview about her documentary My Mind and Me.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gomez called Swift “her only friend in the industry.” E! News shared the quote on its Instagram, which allegedly elicited a response from Raísa, who commented, “Interesting.” This response was all fans needed to push for controversy — and a growing feud among fans — on social media.
For context, Raísa donated her kidney to Gomez in 2017 when she learned Gomez needed a kidney due to complications from her lupus diagnosis. Following the procedure, the two friends did media interviews together, revealing more about the process and their friendship. It’s not to say that Raísa made her alleged comment based on this organ donation, but fans felt that Gomez should at least acknowledge their friendship because of this. On the other hand, many came to Gomez’s defense, claiming no one should expect anything from donating, whether from a stranger or friend.
Comments from the online dispute over Gomez’s comment in Rolling Stone led to the singer allegedly making a comment via TikTok.
“Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know,” Gomez allegedly wrote as a comment on a TikTok video discussing the social media-fueled drama.
In true internet fashion, that comment went over like a lead balloon, with Reddit users dragging Gomez for what they consider a flippant and passive-aggressive comment. However, some agree with the singer, saying she doesn’t have to list everyone she knows and some feel that Gomez meant “music industry” versus “Hollywood” — and Raísa is an actress.
Things between the friends seemed good before the interview was released. Over the summer, Gomez posted a video to TikTok showing her and Raísa playing the “He’s a 10 but…” game and made references to being best friends.
We might never know exactly what is happening between the two, but one thing is clear: pitting women against each other is never okay. Social media-fueled drama does nobody any good — especially to those involved.
