WATCH: Coldplay Covers This Soda Stereo Classic in Argentina Concert
Coldplay’s live shows are a gift that keeps on giving. During their tour stretch in Argentina (Oct. 25 to 29), they covered one of Latin America’s most popular rock bands: Soda Stereo. The band’s set to play six more shows (Nov. 1 and 2, Nov. 4 and 5, and Nov. 7 and 8) at the Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In total, the band will play 10 shows.
The British rock band covered one of the Argentinian band’s most famous songs, “De Música Ligera,” released in 1990. More than three decades later, the same song remains one of rock en español’s classic hits. It’s no surprise that Chris Martin would cover this hit since he’s done it before in 2017. In fact, he was also part of Soda Stereo’s Gracias Totales shows, where Martin digitally sang “De Música Ligera” with the surviving members of the band.
Social media users are excited and proud of Martin’s cover. A Twitter user wrote: “Appreciation tweet for Coldplay’s cover of ‘De Música Ligera’. Honestly one of their best covers of all time. And with the crowd singing to every word it goes hard as fuck live too!!” Another Twitter user wrote: “I love how coldplay always respect local artists wherever they go. They did this with Juan Luis Guerra in the Dominican Republic and with Soda Stereo in Argentina. Soda and Gustavo are the GOATs and De Música Ligera is one of my favorite songs in the world ❤️.”
Another spectacle in Buenos Aires was the presence of BTS’ Jin, who joined Coldplay for the debut performance of his solo “The Astronaut” on Friday’s show (Oct. 28). After this 10-day tour stop in Buenos Aires, Coldplay will continue to their Latin American dates in São Paulo, Brazil on March 10 and 11, March 13 and 14, and March 17 and 18.
