Alessandro Michele’s allegiance to cinema seemingly reached its zenith last autumn when he shut down LA’s Hollywood Boulevard for Gucci’s Love Parade fashion show. There, he mined the gamut of old school movie references, casting all-star protagonists in fur-trimmed gowns, twinkling negligees, and satin mermaid tail dresses. Less than a year later, the designer has returned to the silver screen, replicating Stanley Kubrick’s most recognisable scenes with excruciating attention to detail. From 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, to Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut, Michele’s adidas collaboration is brought to the fore – all frankensteined three strips and double G motifs – in a campaign shot by Mert and Marcus. There, “clothes turn into highly imaginative functional prosthesis, and they do so to tell a story,” Michele says. “A story that shatters, enchants, tortures, ignites. Because it’s the story of the human that dwells in each and every one of us. As Stanley Kubrick knew too well.”
