5 Acts to Support From Near or Far at Coachella 2022
After two long years, festival season is finally back in full swing! And what better time to ring in the collective euphoria of live music and colorful fashions -like the ones available in H&M’s new festival collection- than by hitting up Coachella’s supercharged 2022 lineup.
Every year, the music festival turned cultural phenomenon ramps up its Latine and Latin American talent roster, continuously finding exciting ways of intersecting traditional sounds, pop hitmakers, and eccentric visionaries. This edition will be no different, welcoming acts from a plethora of countries and genres like corridos, R&B, indie rock, and electronic music. All of them will represent their respective homelands and scenes in their own inimitable voices. Coachella 2022 is even more significant than usual because acts like Omar Apollo, Ed Maverick, and Cariño, who were kept from performing in 2020 due to the pandemic shutdown, get a second chance at dazzling fans in the desert.
In this celebratory spirit of communion and redemption, we’ve decided to preview some of the artists we’re most excited to see take the stage in Indio, California. Bangers on bangers, twerking on twerking, enough whimsical weirdness to keep it all interesting, and a few style suggestions on how to stay cool in the blazing sun. Here are some of the acts you just can’t sleep on at Coachella 2022.
1
Anitta
Pop superstar Anitta reigns supreme in her Brazilian homeland, but the last few years have seen a major push to break further than the South American market and into world domination. The “Envolver” singer has made appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and released blockbuster collaborations with the likes of Major Lazer, J Balvin, and DaBaby. Anitta’s banger-packed Coachella set promises more gyrating than a hula hoop, glam stunts turned up to 100, and H&M is making sure you can keep up.
2
Natanael Cano
Corridos and banda sinaloense have found an effusive home on the Coachella stage, and this year you’ll be able to continue singing along with legends like Banda MS. However, the festival’s 2022 edition also features a classic in the making: Natanael Cano. The corridos tumbados trailblazer is bringing his braggadocious flow to Indio, California, promising to delight fans of his twangy malianteo and neo-buchón fashions, which you can complement with H&M’s dope festival collection. In just a few short years, Cano has proven his star power, and sharp songwriting is no mere fluke, even getting high profile cosigns from rancheras legend Vicente Fernández and Boricua superstar Bad Bunny.
3
Ela Minus
Following her full-length debut Acts of Rebellion release, Ela Minus has been on a non-stop sprint across international stages, even joining Caribou on their recent North American tour. The New York-based Colombian singer and producer was scheduled to appear at Coachella’s postponed 2020 edition, ramping up anticipation for her throbbing beats and gauzy vocals, which will contrast beautifully against the stillness of the California desert. Minus infuses her sleek industrial aesthetics with shocks of neon, similar to H&M’s comfy assortment of hoodies, reflecting the somber tones of her music as well as the rays of hopefulness that always shine through.
4
Nicki Nicole
Meteoric Argentine rapper and chanteuse Nicki Nicole has been on a constant come up since her breakout 2019 single “Wapo Traketero,” becoming one of the brightest stars in South America’s massive trap and R&B wave. Her remarkable versatility has led to collaborations with everyone from Rauw Alejandro andBizarrap, to pop icon Christina Aguilera, Mexican cumbia legends Los Ángeles Azules and Argentine reggae luminaries Dread Mar-I. Riding high off the release of last year’s acclaimed Parte de Mí LP, we can’t wait to see Nicki Nicole belting cuts like “Colocao” and “Sabe” while styling in some of her trademark graphic streetwear.
5
Jean Dawson
As a child of the border, playing Coachella is almost a spiritual homecoming for Jean Dawson. The avant-pop agitator’s prismatic 2020 LP Pixel Bath brought his bilingual collages of alt-rock, hip-hop, and beat-making madness to the masses, giving us a lyrical tour through his Tijuana roots and Los Angeles upbringing. Explosive cuts like “Power Freaks” and “Starface*” were coupled with grungy, industrial art direction, contrasted against bold choices of color, texture, and silhouette, always available at H&M. Prepare to thrash at the Jean Dawson mosh pit alongside some of the coolest cats in all of the festival.
