Yuridia Covers Chalino Sánchez & Sings With Ángela Aguilar on New Album

Yuridia is embracing música Mexicana for the first time in her new album Pa’ Luego Es Tarde, released today (Oct.21). Among the new tracks, the Mexican pop star covers a classic by Chalino Sánchez and duets with Ángela Aguilar.

It’s been over 15 years since Yuridia placed second in the Mexican singing competition La Academia. She has since become one of the most famous stars to emerge from the series. Pa’ Luego Es Tarde is Yuridia’s first album in seven years. This time, she is blending her Latine pop sound with música Mexicana. The LP features arrangements from ex-Calibre 50 singer Edén Muñoz, and she co-wrote the songs with Muñoz, Horacio Palencia, José Luis Roma, and Pepe Aguilar. The Hermosillo native is truly embracing her Mexican roots in her music.

“I have sung some Regional Mexican songs before, but it was always something I’ve looked at with much respect,” Yuridia said in a statement. “However, the quarantine allowed me to reconnect again with the music I grew up with and was always playing at home. But I also wanted to do it my way, because the best way to pay homage is by being present.”

Yuridia teamed up with Pepe Aguilar’s daughter, Ángela Aguilar, for their duet “Qué Agonía.” In the mariachi ballad, the two women sing about struggling to move on from a breakup. Yuridia and Aguilar pack the heartfelt song with powerhouse performances, and their huge voices complement each other well.

Another standout moment on the album is Yuridia’s cover of one of Chalino Sánchez’s greatest hits. She tackles “Alma Enamorada,” the last song the King of Corridos performed before his murder in 1992. In the chilling video of his final performance, Sánchez was handed what many have speculated to be a death note that he crumpled shortly after reading. The following day, he was found shot dead in a highway ditch near Culiacán, Sinaloa, in Mexico.

In Yuridia’s version of “Alma Enamorada,” the haunting accordion intro from the original is replicated. She digs deep with her soulful voice to breathe new life into Sánchez’s dark love song. Yuridia flexes her versatility as a Latine artist who can sing corridos as well.

Yuridia also collaborated with Banda MS on the track “Y Qué Tal Si Funciona?” Starting next month, she will tour the U.S. with The Pa’ Luego Es Tarde Tour. The tour kicks off in Laredo, TX, on Nov. 4, and it will visit cities across the U.S. through Feb. 2023.
