We Talked To Ally Brooke About Her Favorite Soundtracks of All Time

Encanto’s hit song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was recently parodied by The Late Late Show with James Corden and Corden’s writers. It was in response to the shocking incident that took place at the 94th annual Academy Awards this past weekend.

If you haven’t heard about the controversial incident, which would be hard to believe: On Sunday night (March 27), actor Will Smith walked onto the stage during the live ceremony and slapped comedian Chris Rock across the face. This altercation came after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock was there to present an award for Best Documentary Feature.

Over the last few days, the confrontation has generated countless online memes and spoofs, and Corden and his crew weren’t about to let the opportunity for a good ribbing pass them by. So, they changed the lyrics of Encanto‘s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” to “We Don’t Talk About Jada,” giving the controversial topic a more lighthearted twist.

The skit is set inside a makeshift writers’ room where Corden and his staff brainstorm jokes about the Oscar ceremony. When one of the writers suggests they acknowledge the Smith-Rock debacle, Corden becomes adamant that they must avoid it.

“No,” Corden says. “We don’t talk about Jada. No, no, no.” Cue the music. The staff then starts singing about some of the evening’s memorable moments. Some of the lyrics of the rewritten song included “Beyoncé crushed ‘Be Alive,’” and “Regina [King] grabbed Josh Brolin’s thighs.” Still, it never brings up “The Slap” or shows a clip of it — a safe (and rather smart) approach to covering what has been a tense and divided discussion. 

Since Oscars night, Smith has apologized via an Instagram post for his behavior, which he called “unacceptable and inexcusable.” The Academy has opened an official investigation on the matter, which many say should include some form of punishment for Smith.
