‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ Becomes Disney’s Highest-Charting Soundtrack Song in 26 Years
“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the movie Encanto has taken over the internet as well as the Billboard charts. Sung by the movie’s cast —Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, and Stephanie Beatriz— the soundtrack song reached a peak of No. 4 on the Hot 100. The song beat out “Let It Go” from Frozen, which peaked at No. 5, as the highest-charting tune from any Disney animated movie in 26 years.
The last song from a Disney animated movie to take the top spot at No. 1 on the Hot 100 was “A Whole New World,” sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle from Aladdin in 1993. Vanessa Williams’ “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” by Elton John from The Lion King charted at No. 4 in 1995.
Encanto could partially thank TikTok and the internet for taking an interest in the movie. On the app, the hashtag “Encanto” has amassed billions of views and the song has been used in close to 300,000 videos. Also, the soundtrack jumped six positions and reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 last week.
Since the start of the pandemic, movies struggled to break even at the box office but some are finding their footing. One of the movies that helped the industry make a significant comeback is Encanto. It has been the most successful animated movie at the box office. It brought in $222.6 million at the global box office and $93 million domestically. The movie has also begun to receive awards and accolades like taking home the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film, winning against other Disney movies Raya and the Last Dragon and Luca.
We’re excited to see other songs from the movie start getting their due, like “Surface Pressure” and “Dos Oruguitas” — which has been shortlisted for Best Original Song for the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony.
