Vico Ortiz Is Reclaiming Their Identity & the ‘Sparkly Fairy’ They Used to Be
Latine daughters just can’t get away from their dad’s unsolicited comments! During a public event in Zacatecas, Mexico, on June 10, Pepe Aguilar felt the need to comment on his daughter’s wardrobe – and in front of cameras. Here’s what he had to say about Ángela Aguilar’s dress amidst their performance.
“[I have] two things to tell you. Well, three,” the “Por Mujeres Como Tú” singer told his 18-year-old daughter in front of the audience. “First, congratulations. Second, shall we sing a song? And third, why is that garbage you’re wearing so low-cut?”
Pepe then tells the audience: “Sorry, but what can you expect from someone from Tayahua? Over in Tayahua, we say what we feel.” Tayahua is a town in Zacatecas, Mexico. While this might be a norm in his pueblo, it’s 2022, man. We can do without his opinion on his daughter’s outfit.
In the recorded video, Ángela appears smiling at her dad’s commentary, ready to move on to the performance. This came after she received the special recognition of “Representante Cultural del Estado [Cultural Representative of the State]” in Zacatecas, Mexico. “It is a great source of pride for me, and today, I can see that it doesn’t matter where you are born, but rather where your heart is from,” Ángela told the public upon receiving the award. “And my heart is 100 percent Zacatecan.”
Of course, the Twitter-verse had a lot to say about the public interaction between the family members. A Twitter user commented: “They confuse the ‘daddy’s love’ of don @PepeAguilar with his fucking machismo.”
Another Twitter user said: “Scolding her daughter for wearing low-cut cleavage is a clear example that nothing has changed, we continue to normalize machismo. Disgusting.”
Others defended Pepe’s wardrobe commentary as a “joke.” A Twitter user said: “It was also an icebreaker, for her and with the public. Very much like him to make jokes!”
Whether it was a joke or not, what’s clear is that Ángela is leaving her mark as part of the iconic La Dinastía Aguilar family. Only 18 years of age and already receiving special recognitions? That’s talent! It’s sad that Pepe had to say that comment at an event where she was being awarded and recognized, but for many Latinas, this was a very relatable moment. After all, it’s not the first time he’s had words for the younger generation of Mexican Regional artists.
