Then and Now with Tonne Goodman–A White Hot Sustainable Look to Spice Up Spring Dinner Parties
As a long-time champion of environmental causes and sustainable products, Tonne Goodman –legendary stylist, former Vogue fashion director, current Vogue Sustainability editor—has always been my north star on what to buy, where to buy it, when to buy it, and how to wear it. It doesn’t hurt that she is one of the chicest women I’ve ever met, and I idolize her personal style as much as I do her work for both Vogue and our planet. With Tonne’s book Point of View coming out last year, we thought a joyful way to talk about the future of fashion would be to look back to some of Tonne’s greatest shoots for Vogue and breathe new life into the looks by shopping them out from sustainable brands. This is a celebration of timelessness—good style is forever, as are great wardrobe basics—and we already know Tonne’s edit will stand the test of time.
Then:
On a rainy Wednesday in New York City, Tonne and I turn our attention to brighter days—specifically, a fashion story Tonne did with Steven Klein for Vogue’s August 2015 issue. Featuring Arizona Muse all-dressed up at home, we immediately dive into planning our dream post-Covid dinner tables while flipping through the images of this story. “This was an issue where Vogue editors interpreted looks for fall, and I elected to supplement the current affair of the moment, which incorporated selfie sticks, drones, and virtual reality. We enlisted a real drone and used all the props that gave this story the charm that it has,” Tonne states. Not only was this future-facing for 2015, this look of Arizona entertaining her son while she eats a fancy dinner for one at home feels thoroughly 2021 to me. “This picture was the last of the series, Arizona and her actual son, who I actually photographed before. He was, of course, mesmerized by the virtual reality headset,” Tonne continues.
Now:
After this year, mainly spent at home, the separation between our outside wardrobes and our indoors wardrobes has certainly joined into one big fashion puzzle. The rules have been broken and there is no reason to not wear sweatpants out, if the mood strikes, and not dress in a ballgown at home, if you’d like to have a special occasion sans occasion. “This picture is all in the details,” Tonne says, and it’s true. If we have learned anything in the last year about fashion, it’s that it’s all about pieces that make you feel good, wherever you are and whatever you are doing. Who knew how much an earring could mean to a Zoom call? How much putting on a heel to walk around your house could boost your mood? Now, whether you are still at home or safely starting to venture out, let’s continue to celebrate the details that not only make looks but spark joy.
An all-white look, no matter the season, is always a good idea. A white tee gets fashionably amped up with this one-shoulder, organic jersey Gauge81 top that is OEKO-TEX®-certified to ensure it’s free of harmful chemicals. Nanushka’s regenerative leather skirt, with a fluted hem, is the perfect pair to create a timeless, bright, and clean outfit that is easily dressed up or down.
Pink shoes add much-needed pep and color. Aera shoes are not only vegan but considered 110 percent sustainable based on the brand’s ability to offset the environmental impact of making these heels. New York-based jewelry brand, Agmes, utilizes recycled materials to create their timeless treasures, including this statement pearl necklace with hand charm.
And, for dinner? There is nothing better than an aperitivo and an appetizer. Perfect for entertaining at home, Fishwife’s adorably packaged, sustainably sourced canned wild-caught tuna breathes new life into a pantry staple. Serve up your snacks on these eco-friendly, bamboo fiber dishes in the prettiest shade of pink. They match perfectly with your new shoes.
