Sebastián Yatra Pays Homage to Selena Quintanilla in Mexico City Show

As if we didn’t already know, love for Selena knows no bounds. Colombian singer Sebastian Yatra surprised a crowd of an estimated 40,000 this weekend at the Tecate Emblemba festival in Mexico City with an homage to the Tejana queen. With a Mexican flag emblazoned on a screen behind him, he gifted audiences with a cover of one of Selena’s most beloved hits, “Baila Esta Cumbia.”

“¿Cual es el pais mas chingon del mundo entero?” Yatra asked before launching into the classic cumbia.

Yatra’s cover was the second Selena tribute of the festival. Earlier that Saturday (May 14), Mexican singer-songwriter KURT delivered a slowed-down, trumpet-heavy cover of “Como La Flor.”

The inaugural Tecate Emblema festival was held May 13 and 14 in Mexico City, and featured big stars like the Backstreet Boys, Diplo, Gwen Stefani, and Kali Uchis on the bill.

This has been a big year for Yatra, as his star has continued to rise since he broke through with the hit “Tracionera” in 2016. Since 2016, he’s had 18 hits Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart and scored 10 No. 1s on the Latin Airplay chart. And earlier this year, “Dos Orguitas,” the tender ballad anchoring Disney’s Encanto, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
