Our 4/20 Playlist Celebrates Cannabis Activism & Stoner Romance

The Mexican professional boxer Saul “Canelo” Álvarez has a lot coming up – the Guadalajara-native is currently training for his next epic “Legacy is Earned” boxing match against Dmitry Bivol that’s taking place on Saturday, May 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

There’s more than meets the eye to Álvarez, though – he’s not only a professional boxer but he’s also a huge music enthusiast. In a press conference today (April 20), Remezcla had the opportunity to ask Canelo about music, including his attempt at making peace between Residente and J Balvin and what’s currently on his training playlist.

“Well, I tried, because they are both my friends. J Balvin is obviously my brother. And what you try to do is to make sure that both parties are good –  they are both my friends,” Álvarez told Remezcla in Spanish during a press conference. “And I tried to get involved, but there are times when you can’t because, at the end of the day, they have to fix their own problems.”

“But I tried for the same reason because they’re both my friends and I love J Balvin very much,” the 4-division world champion continued about the infamous beef.

When asked about his playlist choice used to hype him up during his training, Canelo prefers to listen to a variety of artists like Regional Mexican acts Carin Leon and Grupo Firme, as well as other genres like bachata, reggaeton, mariachi, and — to our surprise — salsa. “Right now, we’re listening to salsa,” Álvarez told us about his current training music selection.

Additionally, we know that part of the hype of the boxing match has to do with the chosen song that the professional decides to play when making their way to the boxing ring. When asked about his choice for the anticipated event, all he could tell us was that he “always go[es] out with it, that’s the hint.” Knowing that, we are almost certain that it’ll be the iconic Vicente Fernandez classic “El Rey,” of which he’s a huge fan.

Will Canelo be able to earn the WBA (Super) light heavyweight title? We’ll know on May 7.
