FIFA announced on Friday, May 8, that a powerhouse lineup of artists will grace the opening ceremony at the Mexico City Stadium (Estadio Banorte) on June 11. The event promises to set an energetic tone for the tournament, which will span across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
The confirmed performers include legendary rock band Maná, iconic singer Alejandro Fernández, global reggaeton superstar J Balvin, the celebrated group Los Ángeles Azules, and pop sensation Belinda. The diverse roster of talent continues with Mexican-American singer-songwriter Lila Downs, Venezuelan star Danny Ocean, and South African artist Tyla, ensuring a truly international flair for the kickoff.
A Global Celebration of Football and Culture
“The FIFA World Cup is a moment the world shares, and that begins with how we open it,” FIFA stated in an announcement shared by FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The organization emphasized that the ceremony in Mexico City will be a celebration defined by “sound, colour, and meaning.”
This opening event serves as the first note in a tournament that will echo across North America, united by a shared passion for the sport. Organizers noted that the ceremonies are designed to reflect both the unique individuality of each host nation and the collective unity that defines the World Cup experience.
Event Details and Tournament Kickoff
The festivities are scheduled to begin 90 minutes before the opening match kickoff. Gates at the stadium will open four hours prior to the start, allowing fans to enjoy exclusive activations and rewards. Mexico is set to face South Africa in the opening match, marking a historic moment for the venue, which will become the first in history to host three separate FIFA World Cups.
The 2026 tournament will feature 104 matches across 16 host cities. Following the inaugural ceremony in Mexico City, the celebration will continue with subsequent events in Toronto and Los Angeles, leading up to the final match on July 19 at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium).
