Maluma Celebrates His New Collaboration with Beyoncé

Judging by his expression alone, Maluma is clearly thrilled about his latest musical venture: a high-energy, bilingual collaboration with Beyoncé. The track, titled “Cuerpo (Tumbao),” serves as a vibrant hip-swiveling anthem that pays homage to the legendary “La Negra Tiene Tumbao” by the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz. This standout record is featured on the deluxe edition of Beyoncé’s sophomore album, B’Day, which arrived on Friday (Sept. 4) to commemorate her 45th birthday.

Following the release, the Colombian star took to Instagram to share his disbelief and excitement, posting a candid photo of himself staring at his phone screen while the track played. “CUERPO (TUMBAO) ft @beyonce. Out Now,” he captioned, capturing a moment of genuine artistic pride.

A History of Global Collaborations

This partnership marks another milestone in Maluma’s career, as he continues to bridge the gap between Latin music and the global mainstream. His impressive catalog of cross-genre collaborations already includes heavy hitters like Madonna, The Weeknd, and Jennifer Lopez. Similarly, Beyoncé has a storied history of working with Latin icons, having previously collaborated with Shakira, Alejandro Fernández, and J Balvin.

The deluxe album also features a poignant posthumous duet with the late Queen of Tejano, Selena Quintanilla, titled “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor),” and includes a remix of “Get Me Bodied” featuring Puerto Rican rapper Voltio.

According to a press release, the decision to sample Celia Cruz was deeply intentional. Beyoncé has long admired Cruz’s unwavering pride in her African heritage and her refusal to conform to narrow societal beauty standards. The sample was chosen to underscore themes of confidence and strength, serving as a perfect foundation for a track designed to command the dancefloor.

While Maluma once admitted to being “super obsessed” with chasing American collaborations, his perspective has shifted. During a recent interview on Univision’s All Access, he noted, “I was chasing what you could call the American dream, right? Not anymore. Now it’s the Colombian dream, it’s my dream and my country’s dream.”
