At the next Making It Up As We Go Along talk, Alexander Fury and Emma Davidson will share advice on becoming a fashion journalist in the rapidly evolving digital space

Have you ever watched The Devil Wears Prada and wondered what it was really like to work at a fashion magazine? What it’s like to go to Paris, sit front row at the shows, and write about the collections? Well, you’re in luck: Making It Up As We Go Along – the monthly programme of educational events that sees Dazed editors share their expertise and advice on how to break into the creative industries – is back, and this time it’s focused on keeping fashion journalism relevant in the age of TikTok, when all people want to do is watch 30-second videos of people dancing or cleaning their kitchens, while sitting on the loo.

The event will be hosted by Alexander Fury, who is fashion features director of AnOther Magazine and menswear critic of the Financial Times, and has held other dead fancy positions at the Independent, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and others. He will be joined by Dazed Digital’s own fashion features director Emma Davidson, who like Fury, spends much of her year selflessly serving in the chiffon trenches.

As they will be able to attest, the field of fashion journalism is constantly evolving; with the advent of new social media platforms like TikTok, you have to keep adapting reporting methods to keep people engaged.

This might seem like an intimidating concept however during the talk, Fury and Davidson will share advice on how to find your own voice and methods as a reporter to attract and maintain your audience, the key to ensuring a long career within the industry. They will also share their (somewhat unconventional) experiences of breaking into fashion journalism, along with their favourite designers and fashion moments.

The event will be held on Tuesday, November 8; tickets are available through Eventbrite or free for Dazed Club Members. Register here.
