Katy Perry Says She Loves Listening to Becky G’s Music
Katy Perry is proud of the new wave of female pop stars who have emerged in her wake. Among those artists that she loves listening to is Mexican-American singer Becky G.
In an interview with Rolling Stone published on Thursday (Oct. 6), Perry was asked about the artists she’s listened to and championed over the years. She noted that she sees herself in the new generation of pop stars. “I love supporting women and new artists because I’ve walked in their shoes,” she said. “I know how it feels, and I know the challenge and how hard you got to work.”
Perry added that she has shown support to a lot of her favorite artists by including them on her past tours. Among those artists, she mentioned Charli XCX, Marina and the Diamonds, Bebe Rexha, and Becky G. Perry noted that Becky G previously performed on her Witness Tour. “I’m always trying to support those young new artists on their journeys, and it’s amazing to see them succeed,” she said.
There’s actually an interesting connection between Perry and Becky G. In last month’s cover story for Teen Vogue, it was revealed that Becky G’s breakthrough single “Shower” was originally written for Perry. The 2014 song went on to become one of Becky G’s biggest hits when it peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. R. City, the co-writers of “Shower,” confirmed it was written for Perry but that she “never heard it.”
About being fortunate to record the song, Becky said, “It wasn’t written for me. For me, the lesson [was] that the song was bigger than me. Anyone could have sung that song, but I was very lucky. It took me to so many places. I can enjoy it now.”
Becky G’s career has been on the rise ever since. She released her latest album Esquemas back in May, peaking at No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Albums chart.
