How Bogota’s Estéreo Picnic Festival Experienced Taylor Hawkins’ Passing
We’ve heard various “he’s still alive” rumors since the Mexican singer-songwriter idol Juan Gabriel’s sudden death on Aug. 28, 2016. Fans just couldn’t (and still can’t) believe El Divo de Juárez died at such a creative peak amid a sold-out arena tour. Although this did unfortunately happen, the “Querida” singer was recording while touring, which resulted in him leaving an abundance of unreleased music that will be released soon.
According to Billboard, Juan Gabriel’s estate – handled by his son and successor Iván Gabriel – agreed to a deal with Virgin Music U.S. Latin for representation of his music post-2008 and with Universal Music Publishing Group for publishing administration and representation of his entire catalog at a global level. In making this move, the estate is preparing to release his new music. The same article cited unreleased songs in “different stages,” including a third installment of his Los Dúo albums with unfinished collaborations with Mon Laferte, Gloria Trevi, and more.
“He was at the height of his career. He was happy, happy, happy,” Virgin Music Latin America & Iberian Peninsula’s president, Victor Gonzalez told Billboard. “He was recording while he was on tour and because he was so healthy, we were able to re-record old songs and new material, and none of that saw the light of day because he died.”
In addition to these new music plans, the estate is also preparing for other JuanGa activities, such as a potential merch line, television series, film, among other entertainment assets, as part of tributes to keep his legacy alive. We all know that the flamboyant legend was not only a one-of-a-kind artist that kept his music evolving with different collabs, but was also respected by many – what new collaborations and type of music can we expect from his first posthumous album? Whatever it may include, we hope that it is handled with care and respect for El Divo – he undoubtedly deserves it.
