You could be excused for thinking that the current nostalgia cycle is responsible for the revival of the Italian luxury brand Furla. Crafting sleek leather bags and accessories, the label was founded 95 years ago in 1927, but truly blew up in the early 90s, when it expanded across the globe. If nostalgia-obsessed fashion fans are just finding out about Furla, though, then that’s on them – the bags themselves have been here all along.

That isn’t to say that Furla’s offerings haven’t kept up with the times. Keeping one eye on its past (see: clean lines and a focus on functionality), the brand has increasingly focused on sustainability in its latest designs, using repurposed leather upcycled from offcuts at its tanneries, and new techniques that lessen the environmental impact of its manufacturing process.

The results – striking bags in citrus hues and sky blue – take centre stage in “Impractical Magic”, a shoot by the Lagos-based artist Daniel Obasi, in the summer 2022 issue of Dazed. Against muted landscapes, the soft leather bags are a pop of colour, while Furla’s chrome logo stands out in the hands of a model nestled in green shrubbery. Elsewhere the vibrant bags, and models with make-up to match, lay scattered in a vintage car. Take a look at the full shoot in the gallery above.
