Fashion’s obsession with the 90s and 00s knows no bounds, as designers mine the aesthetics of the era and remix and reimagine iconic pieces for a new generation – just take the return of Juicy Couture’s iconic velour tracksuit and UGG’s ongoing renaissance at the hands of Y/Project, Molly Goddard, and Telfar should you be looking for examples. The thing is, this would only be a problem if we weren’t so absolutely here for it, but, as a quick scroll through Instagram or TikTok will reveal, we simply cannot get enough.
Also feeling nostalgic for the early 90s and the accessories that defined our childhood is Silvia Venturini Fendi, who reworked a classic bag for summer 2021 as part of her new-season collection. Riffing on the cute plastic baskets we all probably carried – or otherwise coveted – as kids, this time around, the style comes with an added bonus. Crafted from 100 per cent recycled PVC, the material used to make them comes direct from the Fendi factory floor – for example, the excess that comes from the creation of the house’s shoes and sneakers – meaning it’s as conscious as it is chic.
Where summer 2020 was mostly a write-off thanks to the virus that needs no introduction, this year, days at the beach and lounging in the park with friends are just about within grasp (come through Pfizer et al). Landing in four vibrant colours – including sugary powder pink, baby blue, icy white, and Fendi yellow, the tote comes in two sizes. With one just big enough to fit your phone, a book, and a few essential bits (don’t forget that hand Purell), the other has room for a good few bottles of rosé and a picnic blanket or beach towel.
