Dr. Jill Biden Wore a Favorite American Designer to Meet The Queen

President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden made the trip from the G-7 summit in Cornwall, England, to Windsor Castle to meet the Queen on Sunday. They were welcomed with a royal salute from the palace guards before coming in for tea. For the occasion, Dr. Biden continued her streak of wearing independent American designers with an Adam Lippes suit. 

The single-breasted, powder blue blazer with a matching sheath dress and nude Valentino heels was an elegant choice for such a momentous occasion. The pastel color palette—so appropriate for teatime—complemented the host's pink floral dress and matching pink hat. (President Biden also wore blue, with a navy suit.) Lippes has become a go-to for Dr. Biden, who also wore the ice blue set aboard Air Force One on May 28, this time with Dior heels instead. His blazers have become a staple in her wardrobe as well. The designer shared a photo of Dr. Biden with Queen Elizabeth II on Instagram, writing, “Endlessly honored to be dressing Dr. Jill⁠⁠ Biden in today’s momentous meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.⁠⁠” 

Since the inauguration, Dr. Biden has made it a point to support New York designers like Lippes, who are well-respected in the industry but may not have the same name recognition globally. For the inauguration, she wore a blue outfit from Markarian, a label founded in 2017 by Alexandra O’Neill known for sophisticated formal wear. Her Inauguration Ball outfit, from sustainable designer Gabriela Hearst, was embroidered with each state and territory’s federal flower. In April, she wore an upcycled navy version of the same dress. To go with that “LOVE” jacket last week, she wore a polka-dot dress from Brandon Maxwell, who won the CFDA award for Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2019. Dr. Biden’s subtle through-line of American design talent is a nice show of support for an industry that has suffered in the past year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Who knows what she’ll wear next?
