‘Dos Oruguitas’ Grabs Oscar Nomination – Here’s How the Internet Is Reacting
The moment we’ve all been hoping for has arrived: the most emotional song off of Disney’s Encanto, “Dos Oruguitas,” has been nominated for an Oscar in the category of “Best Original Song.” If “Dos Oruguitas” wins, it will mark the second time a non-English sung track wins “Best Original Song,” the first being “Al Otro Lado Del Río” by Uruguayan singer Jorge Drexler from the film The Motorcycle Diaries.
The singer of “Dos Oruguitas,” Colombian singer/songwriter Sebastian Yatra, took to Twitter to share his live reaction to the nominations, saying: “COLOMBIA WE ARE NOMINATED FOR THE OSCAR!”
In a virtual press room after the announcement, Yatra said: “It’s a gift to be one of the very few Latinos to have this opportunity and be one of the first Latinos to be at the Oscars ceremony singing in Spanish. It made me understand what the song transmits and how very important this is for our culture, not just for Colombians, but for Latinos in general.”
After the nominations, “Dos Oruguitas” trended on Twitter in multiple countries, with fans across the globe coming together to celebrate this nomination.
One emotional father shared a sweet message for Yatra: “To see Dos Oruguitas by @SebastianYatra nominated at the Oscars for best song and seeing my children singing the song with so much love and super happy, it makes me remember when I did the same with The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin…. Hopefully, it’ll take the statue #Oscars #Encanto”
An Encanto fan posted their emotional live reaction to the Oscars nomination, which included them crying and screaming for joy (as did we upon hearing the news).
One user gave us a new appreciation for the moment the song comes on in the film, saying: “Dos Oruguitas is the perfect ballad, it deserves this and more, especially when the songs says ‘Dos Oruguitas a dos mariposas’ after the apology from abuela to Mirabel.”
Even the director and co-writer of Encanto, Jared Bush, chimed in on the nomination:
This nomination of “Dos Oruguitas” comes as no surprise to Encanto’s loving audience. Just this week, the megahit “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” broke the record for longest running Disney song in Billboard Hot 100 history. All we have to say is that we’ll be glued to our TVs to watch the Oscars on March 27 to make sure Encanto gets the awards it deserves.
