Did You Know There’s a Sing-Along Version of ‘Hamilton’ on Disney+?

A new sing-along version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s live stage recording of Hamilton premieres on Disney+ on Friday (June 30).

Originally released as a live stage recording in 2020, Hamilton tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, and explores his involvement in the American Revolution and his impact on U.S. politics. It was adapted from Miranda’s hit play of the same name, which premiered on Broadway in 2015.

The release of the sing-along version of Hamilton marks the third anniversary that the live stage recording debuted on Disney+. To celebrate, fans take their best shot at rapping with songs like “My Shot,” “The Story of Tonight” and “The Room Where It Happens” while the verses appear on the TV screen.

Filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, Miranda stars as the title character alongside Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Leslie Odom, Jr., Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Anthony Ramos, and Ariana DeBose.

“It was basically a three-day film shoot with the best-rehearsed cast in the history of the movies, because we’d all been doing the show for a year at this point,” Miranda told Good Morning America in the summer of 2020.

Miranda said he had no idea how well Hamilton was going to be received by audiences. In 2016, Hamilton earned a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations, winning 11 awards, including Best Musical.

“No one can predict the way a work is received, and the way Hamilton has been received has surpassed everyone’s wildest dreams,” Miranda said. “But our biggest issue has always been accessibility. So, I’m really glad that we had the luxury to basically shoot an independent film in our first year.”

Other sing-alongs Disney+ subscribers can find on the streamer include Encanto, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, Moana, Into the Woods, and more.
