Carlos Vives Brings Colombian Pride to Miami with ‘Tour Al Sol’
Miami’s Kaseya Center was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Colombian culture on Saturday night (May 23) as Carlos Vives brought his highly anticipated Tour Al Sol to the city. The sold-out arena was awash with the colors of the Colombian flag and the iconic silhouettes of sombrero vueltiaos, setting the stage for an evening of deep musical connection.
At 9 p.m. sharp, the atmosphere shifted as three massive screens—including a central, circular display representing the sun—illuminated the venue. A pre-recorded video set the tone for the conceptual two-hour show, with Vives’ voice echoing through the arena: “We all need the sun to be happy.”
The performance was designed as a cosmic journey, tracing a path from the solar system to infinity. Yet, Vives grounded the spectacle in his personal history. “In my homeland, the sun hits incredibly hard,” he noted in the video before taking the stage. “Music took me around the world — not to become more famous, but to show my family what lay beyond Colombia. I have been singing for many years, and one learns who it is they sing for: my country, my land, my people, my region.”
Dressed in a black denim jacket and jeans, and sporting his signature curls, Vives opened the concert with “Volví a Nacer,” immediately followed by fan favorites “La Bicicleta” and “Canción Bonita.” Addressing the crowd, he declared, “How are you, Miami? The city of all. For me, it is important to be in this city.”
Backed by an 11-piece band, Vives navigated through a rich catalog of vallenato and cumbia classics, including “La Gota Fria,” “El Cantor de Fonseca,” “Carito,” “Pa’ Mate,” “Cuando Nos Volvamos a Encontrar,” “Fruta Fresca,” and “Robarte un Beso.”
The night was punctuated by surprise appearances from fellow artists, adding layers of collaboration to the set. Niña Pastori joined for a stirring rendition of “Sombra Perdida,” while Sergio George accompanied Vives for “Si yo volviera a nacer.” The energy reached a fever pitch when Grupo Niche took the stage for a salsa-cumbia fusion of “La Tierra del Olvido,” followed by Fonseca for “Quiero verte sonreir.”
“Each show of Tour al Sol will be a concert from sunrise to sunset — a journey through the emotions of music that moves with the sun,” Vives had previously shared with Billboard Español. “In short, Tour al Sol is a concert with the sun of La Provincia.”
The Tour Al Sol, which began its run on April 16 in Toronto, is scheduled to conclude on June 5 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan.
