Riviir’s Stay Down (Turn on You) Plays the Long Game on a Short EP
Hip-Hop debuts tend to hedge. A radio-ready single here, a guest verse there, a little something for every playlist. Riviir‘s Stay Down (Turn on You) skips the hedging and arrives with a full agenda, and I found myself respecting the nerve of it before I’d reached the second track.
The Harlem rapper, who comes from the Nasir Jones family line, wrote, produced, and arranged all three songs himself, and the discipline shows. Every track carries a proper chorus and three verses of sixteen bars or more, a format that feels almost old-fashioned in 2026. The title cut opens with a child’s voice describing life in the projects, then hands off to Riviir, who works through betrayal, greed, gang loyalty, and the politics hovering over his neighborhood. The instrumental is silky and melodic, which gives his heavier lines room to land. That version exists because a sample refused to clear, so he rebuilt the record from scratch. The original is slated to surface later as a remix, and I’m curious to hear the two side by side.
“Head Kisses” is the highlight. Piano, bass guitar, wind chime, and a faint crash cymbal make up the whole arrangement, and the sparseness lets his tribute to a woman who has survived abuse and abandonment breathe. A scratch cuts in before the second and third verses, and a female vocalist sings a chorus that he wrote himself. It’s tender and restrained.
“Tinubu (Slave of the West)” closes the EP with the most ambition and the least polish. Riviir takes on corruption in Nigeria and across Africa, and he calls for unity among Black nations. His convictions are plain, though the song asks listeners to arrive already versed in the names he cites. His rhyme patterns, which he credits to Vybz Kartel, give the verses a rolling momentum that keeps things moving.
For a first release made alone, this is a confident piece of work. A collaborative EP with The Game is on the way later this year, and I’m eager to hear how Riviir’s pen fares alongside a heavyweight.
