Miguel Castro Freitas Redefines Mugler at Paris Fashion Week

Exactly one year after his acclaimed debut as creative director, Miguel Castro Freitas continues to demonstrate his precise vision for the house of Mugler. His Spring/Summer 2027 runway show at Paris Fashion Week serves as a bold declaration of intent, deconstructing the fetishistic clichés of the cabaret and the glamour of old Hollywood, while stripping away any trace of nostalgic sentimentality. In their place, the designer injects a potent dose of aggression and modernity.

From the opening look—an imposing lavender satin bodysuit cinched with rigid hardware and a heavy metallic collar—the collection establishes a fascinating dialogue between anatomical restriction and camp theatricality. Castro Freitas pushes eighties-inspired tailoring to its limits, remaining faithful to the foundational codes of the brand. Much like recent presentations seen in the industry, the jackets serve as the backbone of the collection, constructed with square, padded shoulders, high collars, and a rigorous internal structure.

The color palette features monochromatic ensembles in dazzling lime green and bright orange, tailored with slim belts that draw the eye toward the center of the silhouette. In cropped iterations, the blazers terminate just above the ribcage to frame bare waists, balancing severe geometry with the exposure of the body. This architectural rigidity finds its perfect counterpoint in kinetic, overflowing ornamentation. The excess of nocturnal cabarets comes to life through degraded ostrich feathers, fringe panels that sway with every movement, and wild zebra and deer prints in shades of purple and brown.

Staying true to the foundational obsession of the late Manfred Thierry Mugler with insectoid armatures, the collection incorporates dramatic horn-shaped headpieces, grounded by crocodile-effect leather skirts and minimalist knitwear. The result is a collection that feels both deeply rooted in the house’s history and aggressively forward-looking.
