Mary of Denmark Debuts Spanish Design and Historic Royal Rubies

Queen Mary of Denmark continues to solidify her reputation as one of Europe’s most influential style icons. During a recent visit to the ARoS Museum in Aarhus, accompanied by King Frederik X, the Queen debuted a striking look that perfectly balanced modern Spanish design with the weight of royal history.

For the inauguration of ‘The Dome’—a new artistic space housing James Turrell’s As Seen Below—Mary opted for a midi skirt from The IQ Collection, the label founded by Spanish designer Inés Domecq. The Austral skirt, characterized by its geometric print in vibrant red, burgundy, and silver tones, served as the centerpiece of her ensemble. She paired the piece with a simple, elegant white silk blouse by Jesper Høvring, which featured a flattering V-neckline and delicate gathers to define her silhouette.

The Queen’s accessories further elevated the look. She chose Jimmy Choo Love 100 pumps, which added a touch of festive glitter, and a burgundy Vanessa Crocodile Clutch by Carlend Copenhagen that harmonized with the skirt’s color palette.

A Legacy of Rubies

While the fashion choices were impeccable, the true highlight of the ensemble was the historic parure of rubies worn by the Queen. These jewels possess a fascinating provenance, dating back to the 1804 coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte. Originally belonging to Désirée Clary, the collection eventually became a cherished part of the Danish royal legacy.

The rubies were a favorite of the late Queen Ingrid, grandmother of King Frederik X. Following her passing in 2000, the collection was bequeathed to the then-Crown Prince. Mary first wore these significant pieces as Crown Princess in 2004, and they have since remained a symbol of her role within the monarchy.

This appearance serves as a testament to Queen Mary’s ability to bridge the gap between contemporary trends and the enduring traditions of the Danish crown, marking a graceful new chapter for the royal family.
