Meet the Dominican Singer Who Turned Four Judges’ Chairs on ‘The Voice’

A Dominican-American singer made waves on The Voice last night (Oct. 10) with his audition. During his appearance on the show, Willie Gomez received support from Britney Spears and turned all four judges’ chairs.

Before appearing on The Voice, Gomez worked as a background dancer for Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, and Katy Perry. In 2017, when he started to shift his focus to his music career, Spears gave him a shout-out on social media. They have remained close friends since then. Last year, Gomez danced with Spears again during her wedding to now estranged husband Sam Asghari.

Spears showed her support for Gomez once again on The Voice. She sent in a pre-taped video message singing his praises. “Willie is a dancer of mine, and not only is he a great dancer, but he is an amazing singer,” Spears said. “I’m sending all my kisses to you. Love you!”

During his audition, Gomez switched things up by singing a song in Spanish. His voice soared as he belted out “La Bachata” by Colombian singer Manuel Turizo. Gomez impressed judges Gwen Stefani, John Legend, Niall Horan, and Reba McEntire. All four of them pushed the red button to turn their chairs around. Gomez decided to join Legend’s team. After the blind auditions conclude, he will move on to the battle rounds.

Gomez was highlighted last year in Remezcla’s 10 Latine LGBTQ+ Acts to Dance With Pride To list. He is openly gay and has dropped bangers like “Baila Baila” and “Salvaje.” His debut album, Del Cibao, came out in July 2022. On Oct. 20, Gomez will release La Vida Disco Pack. 

“It makes me feel very proud of who I am, of who we are, and to get that support from the entire [LGBTQ+] community is very special for me,” he told Remezcla at the time. “I know they love the pop stars, the queens, like we all call them, so it’s awesome to get their support.”
