Lionel Messi Getting Docuseries on Apple TV+ — Here’s What We Know

The world’s biggest fútbol superstar is coming to our TV screens in a much different way than we’re used to. Apple TV+ confirmed that a four-part docuseries about Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi is heading to the streamer, with as-yet-untitled series following the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner through his five FIFA World Cup appearances, all the way through the final, Qatar 20222 World Cup win for Argentina.  

Last year, Argentina’s Copa America win was at the center of a Netflix documentary called Sean eternos: Campeones de América, and Sony Music Entertainment has already announced an animated series – in both Spanish and English – featuring Messi, so a docuseries focusing not just on Argentina’s World Cup win, but on Messi’s role in it feels like an obvious next step for a player that has already cemented his place in the cultural zeitgeist as not one of the best players on the field, but as the recognizable face of the sport.

The docuseries is set the feature behind-the-scenes footage of Messi filmed in Paris (where he played for club PSG), Qatar (as he trained and played the World Cup) and Argentina (as he trained and later, celebrated the win). It will also see Messi, in his own words, tell the story of his career with the Argentina national team, from his first game to his early retirement in 2016, his return to the national team, and his final victory, as well as feature interviews with Messi’s teammates, coaches and those who have followed his career. 

No release date for the project has yet been announced. 

Lionel Messi and his future in club fútbol is uncertain right now, as he has played his last game for PSG and has not yet announced what club he will play with next season. But he has been confirmed to play for the national team Argentina in two friendlies, which are set to take place on June 15th and June 19th.
